Strawberry Jam and A Sale

This past Saturday Adam, Jemimah and I went to a local farm to pick strawberries. Our own strawberry patch is still quite small and most of the few berries we had were eaten by a mysterious critter. However Saturday proved to be the perfect day to pick strawberries! The sun was shining, there was a cool breeze and Jemimah was overwhelmed by the abundance of strawberries, her favorite fruit. All weekend long she referred to our time picking as the "strawberry party". There was quite a crowd picking and several children among them.
Saturday afternoon I made a batch of jam, as well as strawberry shortcake. Making strawberry jam brings back many sweet memories of being a young woman at home. My two sisters and I first learned to make and preserve strawberry jam in our late teens. We were absolutely thrilled with the outcome and went on to make jam from every berry we found fresh in our area. We would generally put on some music, wear our calico aprons and make a real event out of making jam.
You do need an apron when making jam. It has a tendency to splatter when boiling or when pouring the jam into the jars. I always wear an apron while canning. : ) With this thought in mind I am offering a discount of 15% on all of the items in my shop this week. A new apron is a great way to inaugurate the canning season! Strawberry jam also marks the beginning of the canning season for me and I am sure for many other ladies. Please be sure to stop by my shop and check out the different style aprons I have currently listed. To take advantage of the special offer use coupon code LILAC15 when checking out.

I hope you all have a lovely week enjoying the beauty and bounty of springtime! Have you made strawberry jam yet this year? Do you have a favorite jam you make each year?

  1. Our favourite jam was with Blackberries, made into a jelly. Purple stains are impossible to get out!

  2. Strawberries are my favorite fruit as well! I haven't canned for a few years. Maybe I will this year! We have a peach tree that I planted a few years ago & it is loaded with lil baby peaches. I hope many of them come to maturity! If they do I hope to make some peach preserves 😊

  3. Sounds like a wonderful outing for a strawberry party!

I haven't canned yet as its a bit too hot outside. Strawberry jam is a favorite here too but our all time favorite is plum jelly!

We've been picking currants and cherries and they are in the freezer to can in the Fall. I can't wait! Yum!

    Happy Summer to you!

    Blessings, Amy

  7. Oh what a joy and breath of fresh air your lovely posts always are, Sarah :) I enjoyed your lovely photos so much and smiled as I envisioned you working on your canning and enjoying the process, as well as at the thought of sweet Jemimah delighting in the abundance of strawberries. What a blessing your memories must be to have spent precious time making jams with your sisters and to enjoy it now, as well, and look forward to teaching to Jemimah. My mom and I were just talking about how we need to work on some canning and make some preserves this year. In the busyness of life, it is special to take time to do these kinds of wonderful things.
Your calico aprons are so lovely also, and I always enjoy seeing them. Ah, calico is such a perfect variation of fabric.

I also wanted to thank you so much for your recent comment that I truly delighted in reading, as always♥ And I wanted to say that I apologize you were not on my list I mentioned within that post. I made a short list mentally and then wrote that actual part of the post a little later and my brain fell short in adding everyone I had intended. I knew someone was missing! I realized that the moment I saw your comment. I have added you now- you have undoubtedly long since been an inspiration and blessing to me in thinking of the kind of woman I pray to be, namely in your dedication and love for the Lord and your family and your skilled, beautiful work with your hands.

    Blessings and hugs to you,
    Jazzmin

  8. While my family and I were on vacation, my Grandma gave us a batch of her freezer strawberry jam so I'm not sure if well be making any this year. Another favorite freezer jam to make is cherry jam, using the pie cherries. Mmmm!! Thanks for putting me in the mood to get back into the kitchen and slipping on one of my aprons. :)

  9. I love strawberries! YUM! The thing I hate about jelly and jams is that there is so much sugar in them. I *want* to eat them...but dare not as the sugar goes right to my waist! I love the aprons in your shop! :)
